Recommendations?

I'm looking for someone to tune my piano. Does anyone have a recommendation for me? Do any of you do this thing? [livejournal.com profile] pied_piper70? Would it be reasonable or unreasonable for me to attempt to learn to do it myself?

I'll also be looking for someone to fix a crack in the soundboard. Who can give me a solid recommendation for a piano repair person/shop?

Tomas Hardy tunes pianos and his friend does restoration work. I have to go look for their numbers and can't do it presently but will get it too you later if you like.

I thought Thomas Hardy wrote novels about fallen women.

Thanks for sending me the info! I'll let you know how it goes.

He may have but this guy is just Tomas no H maybe that's how he hides among the rest of us.

Shoot! I was going to recommend the guy who tuned my piano, but I don't have his number. Scott doesn't do that, but he may know someone. If you want to do it yourself, you need at least minimal equipement. Doesn't seem too hard if you have good pitch.

Actually, it's not something you want to try to do yourself unless you've been trained...Each keys has three strings (except the bass notes), and tuning a piano involves getting all three strings just slightly out of tune so that, to our ears, it's all actually "in tune" or well-tempered...Doing so requires some training...

In any case, I have no leads on a piano tuner but I see ads all the time...You could ask Groth Music or even Schmidt Music who they'd recommend...but I'd go for [livejournal.com profile] mizzlaurajean's suggestion first...

IF you find somebody good who'll work in Hopkins, let me know, too? I have friends in St. Paul who like their tuner but whomever it is doesn't come this far west.

Actually, I could use both services too. :) Let us know what you find out? And if you were satisfied with the service.

Well, there's Mr. Opporknockity, but... no, I can't say it...

I wouldn't recommend tuning your own piano. I know a lot of DIY-ers, many of whom are fellow music school comrades... not a one of us has ever attempted to tune our own piano! Especially if you have a crack in the soundboard - you need someone to fix that professionally, obviously.

I'd recommend my tuner, but ya know - I live in PA.

If you don't manage a good lead from friends here, I'd say contact the downtown Schmitt music and see if they have a list of tuners they recommend (I bet they do).
