I agree that it is interesting, and I'm curious to find out what happens. But ultimately, it is about two people who have been hurt, and are reluctant to be hurt again, yet still need to be connected. Maybe it is good that they start out by acknowledging that they have been hurt and don't want to be close to anyone. (This way, nobody is surprised when mines go off.)
It is so interesting, I think, because most people can identify with either character--wanting to push people away so as to avoid being hurt, but still wanting to be connected to people.
