I once again observed an annual tradition - Buy Nothing Day.

I must admit, by this point I'm mostly doing it due to the combined effects of a complete lack of needing anything and a mild aversion to subjecting myself to crowds merely to earn the privilege of spending money. But sticking it to a president who thinks it's unpatriotic not to spend copious amounts of money is also satisfying.

Did anyone else observe the day?

I only bought myself lunch, but I did sell things to a very few people. So I guess I was still a part of the evil...

Heh. I wish there was more "evil" like you in the world.

I think it's pretty clear that it's not the buying and selling of stuff, it's the disposable culture, massive debt, and concentration of wealth that's the problem.

Which, of course, makes you part of the solution.

I do feel guilty sometimes when I have had customers that I know are compulsively buying and just getting some sort of fix. It makes me sad.
I do have conflicted feelings about having a store that sells mostly luxury items and being opposed to the mass consumerism of this culture.

Well, if one doesn't count the money spent for coffee and such while listening to Riverfolk Friday night at the Riverview Cafe, then we also observed the day.

Not getting out of bed until noon certainly made it easier to observe the day...

I think the whole thing is dumb, both the buying frenzie and the buy nothing protest. I started my holiday shopping the weekend before to feel like I was getting started and to avoid crowds.

I didn't buy; I worked. But then, most days are "Buy nothing day" for me.

Are you allowed to work where you work and have these non-consumerist leanings? I applaud your nonconformity!

I didn't know about Buy Nothing Day until I saw this mention of it. I was out at the malls (I went to see Enchanted) that day, though, and got the impression that nobody else had heard about it either.

I love Not Christmas Shopping. Last yeat I bought everything the Savetherainforest/animalrescuesite/etc. charity shops. Hella cool stuff, very reasonable prices, conforms to my ideals and shipped to my house. AND on my receipt it told me how much my purchase donated to needy animals. I'll totally be doing that again this year. Totally rad.

Does it count if we only bought mostly local raw milk cheese, mushrooms, and beer in Canada? Lee's parents live about 40 min (not including border crossing) from Vancouver BC, and we went to one of the indoor markets.

But there was a 3 hr wait at the border for all those Canadians coming back from shopping in WA! Partly becuse the Canadian dollar was worth _more_ than the US one.

We didn't buy anything on that day.

I really dislike shopping in December.
